Acupuncture and Whiplash

Auto AccidentWhiplash injury is the most common injury suffered from a motor vehicle accident. Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissue of the neck, also referred to as neck sprain or neck strain. It is often caused by a sudden forceful movement of the neck, but with no direct contact to the neck. It may include injury to the joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots. Whiplash typically has long-term physical and subjective symptoms for which acupuncture can successful treat.

If you have ever suffered a whiplash or any other neck injury you know how limiting and painful it can be. We rely on the neck to support our head and when the ligaments and muscles within the neck are damaged, the head’s range of movement is restricted.

The limited range of movement may stop us from carrying out normal day-to-day tasks such as driving, sitting at our desks for long periods of time, and doing the house work and many of us are want to find relief as soon as possible. Acupuncture can reduce and relieve your pain.

If a whiplash injury is left untreated, while the body will temporarily adjust so that we do not experience so much pain, you may experience headaches, back pain, neck and shoulder pain, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, sensations of burning or “pins and needles” later in life.

Acupuncture has proved to be a particularly effective in relieving the neck pain and other symptoms associated with whiplash injuries. In some cases acupuncture has helped in the treatment of whiplash patients suffering long-term symptoms and helped patients regain range of motion.
